Fauna Meets Function: Creating Useful Objects That Stare Back at You

Saturday and Sunday 24th &25th  August 1-4:30pm

Do you ever look at a bowl and think, “Why, that looks like rhinoceros”? Or at a cup and think, “That would be perfect, if only it had a long neck and a beak”?

Even if you haven’t had those epiphanies, you’ll want to take this workshop. Over two days, Susan will show you how to transform ordinary functional vessels into animals and birds that want to serve. We’ll create gesture and expression through the addition of legs, hooves, heads, and eyes to blank bowls, cups, and boxes; we’ll also experiment with techniques to add graphic interest to the clay surfaces. Susan will provide blanks for you to build on and colored slips for you to decorate with. Bring photos or drawings of animals or birds (or both) that you find animated and interesting, and we’ll turn them into stoneware friends that you’ll never have to feed—but that will happily feed you.
