BEGINNERS ARE WELCOME AT ALL OUR MONTHLY CLASSES
Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced artist our classes offer a fun, relaxed and nurturing environment to learn ceramics. We’ve created a space to inspire you, where you can switch off from the stresses of the outside world and channel your creativity into learning a craft. Come and make something you can use around the house or treasure forever. Our students range from complete beginners to those who have been coming to us for many years. Class sizes are small so the we can offer individual attention and tons and tons of encouragement.
“This is a fantastic place with real artists who care enough to spend their time bringing you up to speed on many levels. If your a beginner like I was this is the place to get started on the right foot. If you are an-accomplished potter you will find the space , equipment and access necessary to get you to your next personal best.” Corbin
“Pottery has become such an important part of my week. I’ve never pursued an activity that brings me such pleasure and peace, and I really look forward to both my classes each week. Faye and Grace are wonderful teachers!” Sonia
What to expect
We run our classes in 4 week sessions. This makes it easier to fit it into your schedule and keeps it affordable. You’re welcome to only attend one four week session if you choose to, but we must warn you pottery is incredibly addictive and you will probably want to attend more! On the third week of class you have the option of signing up for another month of classes and then we put any empty spots on the website ( join our mailing list to be notified)
We teach throwing and handbuilding in most of our classes. Most students want to start on the wheel and we will take new students through the process of throwing, trimming and glazing a pot. If throwing isn’t for you give handbuilding a try. There are many ways to make something from clay and you are welcome to try as many as you wish from pinching to coiling to slab building.
If you prefer to attend a class which is only throwing or only handbuilding we have those too! At the end of the 4 week period you are welcome to switch to another class time, just ask your teacher about available space. Unfortunately we aren’t able to switch students to another class mid - month.
Our favorite comment from customers is “pottery class is the favorite part of my week” So if you feel like your week needs a little calm and creative time just for you come join us!
“With no pottery experience (and really no art experience) I started taking classes at LCW six years ago. Now my home is filled with original pieces and I always have presents to give my loved ones! Great place to learn or get back into a fully stocked studio with teachers to help at any level.” Sarah
“Awesome teachers. I come in with a pottery idea and they help me figure it out! Love London Clayworks!! Last project… orchid pot!” James

Susan Berman - Fauna Meets Function
Because a bowl sometimes looks like a rhinoceros, and a jar would feel more secure if it had a long neck and fangs, you’ll want to join Susan for two days of barking, crowing, snarling, and roaring, as we transform ordinary functional vessels into animals and birds that want to serve.
We’ll create gesture and expression through the addition of legs, hooves, heads, and eyes to blank bowls, cups, and boxes; we’ll make lidded vessels out of beasts of burden, and lanterns and candelabras out of the heads and bodies of birds, sloths, weasels, or whatever animal makes you laugh.
We’ll experiment with techniques to add graphic interest to the clay surfaces. Bring photos or drawings of animals or birds (or both) that you find animated and interesting, and we’ll turn them into stoneware friends that you’ll never have to walk, feed, or run away from. Susan will provide blanks for you to build on and colored slips for you to decorate with. We’ll be using Alligator Raku Lite #138; those who want to use their own sculpture, please contact in advance for instructions.
Some experience with coil and slab building is helpful but not necessary. Beginners have been known to make spectacular pieces in these classes!
If you have questions before the workshop, please call Susan at 504-284-8787. She will be delighted to brainstorm with you.
