Ceramics Below Sea Level - Katie Gruzd
Katie's first ceramics teacher once told the class, "Life is short, so surround yourself with beautiful things." This is precisely what motivates Katie to create, and describes her approach to ceramics. With a focus on functional pieces that can be used often, Katie hopes that her work can help fill people's everyday life with beauty. You can follow along, and access her online store via Instagram @ceramicsbelowsealevel.
Katie started pottery at Loyola University. She continued her studies in a local pottery studio in New York City whilst obtaining her masters degree in Sustainable Development. Once back in New Orleans, Katie joined The London Clayworks as a student and soon became an open studio member. Katie also works full time for local non-profits working to restore Louisiana's coastal wetlands, and promote environmental education across the city. She finds that her professional focus on the environment connects to her love of making pottery since clay is a natural material, and is particularly prevalent in coastal Louisiana's soils. She hopes to explore this connection further one day through her ceramics.
